Was up at my secret honey hole today in shannonville. On the water at 9am and caught over 100 crappie by 1pm. Just a few slabs, was forced to keep many that i would usually throw back but because they were so AGRESSIVE, many of the fish were hooked too deeply (i tried moving up to a 1/16 jig head but wasn't getting much action so i had to use a 1/32 which they were swallowing faster than i could set the hook!) i will probably try a braid line with a leader on a longer rod so that i can set the hook quicker and avoid the fiends from swallowing the hook. thanks. i was on the water by 7 am today just before the rain front moved in. by about 11 am the 3 of us had caught over 150 fish. things got ugly when another boat arrived and started to fish right across the port side of our boat. the move was intentional as they felt that the fish were only in one spot...in front of US! i asked if they could cast on the 3 other sides of their boat...but was ignored.
well, i grabbed my rod with the 30lb braid, threw on a large swim bait hook and added some split shot, and casted it straight across the 4 bobber lines that were engulfing our boat. i retrieved my line quickly and was able to catch the 4 lines that were 3 feet in front of us. once retrieved, i cut my braid and tossed the 4 bobbers nests back to my neighbours. they moved.
didn't want to be mean...but they were trying to push us right out of the spot.
otherwise, we had a great day

Hey Gipper. If you want less chance in the crappie swallowing the hook so deep try same size jig with a super long shank on the hook. It should help.

Crappies! Caught nearly 30 of these guys on Saturday. All in this size range. Kept 8... This wasn't from Simcoe/Holland River, but it's some crappies none the less. Attachments:

Is anyone actually catching Crappie on South Cooks Bay right now? or is it still just hype?
